How to open a pathology lab in India

PulseOne team · 31 October 2026 · 5 min read

Opening a pathology lab or collection centre takes planning across five areas: the business plan, premises, people, equipment and paperwork. This checklist helps you cover each one.

Important: registration and licensing rules differ from state to state and change over time. Always confirm the exact requirements with your state or district health authority, and take professional advice where needed.

1. Decide what kind of lab you'll run

A full pathology lab, a collection centre linked to a bigger lab, or a lab inside a hospital or clinic each need different space, staff and equipment. Start with the tests you plan to offer and the number of patients you expect each day.

2. Premises

Plan separate areas for patient waiting and registration, sample collection, the testing area, and safe storage and disposal of biomedical waste. Good lighting, ventilation, water and power backup matter for equipment and quality.

3. Qualified people

You'll need a qualified pathologist to supervise and sign reports, plus trained lab technicians (for example DMLT or B.Sc./M.Sc. MLT), a phlebotomist and front-desk staff. Pulse1's Manpower Solutions can help you find verified candidates.

4. Equipment and supplies

List the analysers and instruments needed for your test menu, along with reagents, consumables, refrigeration and sample transport. Plan regular maintenance and calibration.

5. Registration and compliance

Check with your local authority about clinical establishment registration, trade and local licences, biomedical waste management authorisation and tax registration such as GST. Many labs also work towards quality accreditation over time.

6. Software from day one

Starting with lab software avoids the work of moving off registers later. Pulse1 lets a new lab start free and then pay ₹10 per bill, so software cost grows only as your patients grow.
